Kalamazoo pays to help Michigan Municipal League lawsuit over electricity charges

Kalamazoo City Commissioners have agreed to give $20,000 to the Michigan Municipal League to support a legal fight against Consumers Energy. In January, the utility filed an application with the Michigan Public Service Commission to do away with a program called the Municipal Pumping Credit. The credit reduces the amount cities pay for electricity expended for water and wastewater services.

Kalamazoo City officials say doing away with the credit could cause their costs to spike between $800,000 and $1-million per year. The Michigan Municipal League is filing a lawsuit on behalf of its membership, which includes the city of Kalamazoo.
