ISAAC holds education funding forum in Kalamazoo

Cuts in state spending on pre-school and K-12 education will be the focus of a forum in Kalamazoo Saturday, April 24th. It's sponsored by ISAAC, the Interfaith Strategy for Advocacy and Action in the Community.

Last year the state cut K-12 spending by $165 per student, a move that caused many school districts to eliminate jobs and reduce programs. Even more cuts seem likely in the next budget despite Governor Granholm's threat to veto them. ISAAC Executive Director Rachael Tanner says grassroots efforts are needed to keep prevent more cuts in education. But she says that isn't enough by itself. She says Michigan needs to look for ways to raise more money, not just slash spending.

Tanner says ISAAC encourages citizens to call and write to lawmakers, and voice their concerns in person in Lansing. Tomorrow's education summit runs from 9 a.m. to noon at the Maple Street Magnet School for the Arts in Kalamazoo.
