A Grand Rapids area state Representative has introduced a resolution calling on Jase Bolger to give up his duties, at least temporarily, as Speaker of the House. Mlive reports Democrat Brandon Dillon introduced the resolution Wednesday. It calls for Bolger to step as aside as Speaker while a one-judge grand jury investigates a scheme hatched by Bolger and State Representative Roy Schmidt of Grand Rapids. They conspired to put a “fake Democrat” on the ballot to make Schmidt’s election easier as he switched from the Democratic to Republican Party. A spokesman for Bolger dismissed the resolution, and it’s not likely to see action in the Republican controlled House.
A recent poll shows Bolger could be in a tight race to keep his state House seat representing parts of Kalamazoo and Calhoun Counties. Mlive Political columnist Tim Skubick questions whether the political corruption issue will matter to voters in November. Skubick says the Republicans might have greater reason to worry about a new pension tax passed last year.
