The expensive campaign for and against six ballot questions in last week’s election is leading to some calls for reform in Michigan. The Detroit News reports that legislation has been introduced to ban paying petition circulators on a “per signature” basis. However federal courts have ruled that paying people to gather signatures is constitutionally protected. Some supporters of the various ballot questions caution against restricting the petition process.
