Kalamazoo Commission could consider new anti-discrimination ordinance

Two Kalamazoo city commissioners say they want to move forward with a new anti-discrimination ordinance despite an organized and vocal campaign against it. The ordinance originally passed in December added sexual preference and gender identity to the City's existing policy. That angered some residents who organized a petition drive opposing it.

That led City commissioners to repeal the ordinance and appoint a panel to study the issue. It met Wednesday but didn't take action because its chairman was absent. But City Commissioner Don Cooney, who's on the subcommittee, says he wants to see the same ordinance approved again without any changes. The subcommittee plans to meet again next Wednesday. It could make a recommendation on the issue to the full City Commission then.
