City settles lawsuit over teen who lost teeth in tussle with officer

The Kalamazoo City Commission has agreed to settle a lawsuit brought by the guardian of a teenager whose teeth were knocked out by a public safety officer while he was in custody one year ago. Michael Goldman was 16 when Officer Derek Nugent shoved him into a wall at Public Safety headquarters knocking out three teeth. His guardian, Julia Frank, sued for $5-million. Monday night commissioners agreed to settle for $175,000.

City Attorney Clyde Robinson says the settlement comes early in the legal process, before the suit even went to trial. He says that saves time and money for all parties. Officer Nugent was also transferred from his post at the downtown transit center and suspended without pay for a short time.
