A federal bankruptcy court in Grand Rapids has cleared the way for the sale of Checker Motors Corporation to two Canadian automotive suppliers. Checker Motors declared bankruptcy earlier this year. The Kalamazoo company manufactured taxicabs until the early 1980's when it became a supplier to General Motors.
The Kalamazoo Gazette reports that the sale to subsidiaries of Narmco Group and Van-Rob Incorporated will mean the Checker plant will close at the end of the month. About 125 employees still work at the Checker Motors' plant in Kalamazoo.
