Bill designed to improve bicycle safety introduced in state Legislature

State officials say 18 people in Michigan died last year riding bicycles that were hit by cars and trucks. Kalamazoo-area state Senator Tom George says some of those deaths may have been caused by drivers who didn't know that Michigan law requires them to share the road with cyclists. The Texas Township Republican has introduced a bill that would require all drivers' education classes to cover the subject. This summer George is biking around the state as part of his campaign to win next year's Republican nomination for governor. He has also introduced bills that would increase the penalties for drivers who injure or kill cyclists. The Michigan League of Bicyclists supports the proposal. Spokesman John Lindenmayer says his group also supports adding bike safety to drivers' education. The bills are being considered by several Senate committees. Similar legislation has also been introduced in the state House.
