Deadline nears to complete state budget

The Legislature is taking a break from voting on budgets Monday out of respect for the Jewish Yom Kippur religious observance. The Legislature also canceled plans to meet in a rare Sunday session. But House and Senate negotiators continued to talk, and struck agreements that cut spending on prisons and libraries.

The Legislature's Democratic and Republican leaders say that they can get the budget done before the Wednesday night deadline, despite big disagreements on spending priorities, and whether new taxes should be part of a final budget deal.
