Senate committee approves restrictions on embyonic stem-cell research

Embryonic stem cell research may soon face tougher regulations in Michigan. A Republican-led panel of senators approved bills that would tighten restrictions around embryonic stem cell research. Michigan voters approved a constitutional amendment in 2008 that lifted many of the limits on embryonic stem cell research.

The chairman of the committee that voted on the bills, Kalamazoo area Republican Tom George, says itaEURtms important to ensure all clinics are using ethical practices with stem cell research. Opponents of the Senate legislation say it would hinder or prevent progress in biomedical research. None of the Democratic senators voted for the bills.
