WMU, K-College students "safe" after quake in Japan

Officials at Western Michigan University and Kalamazoo College say all of their students in Japan are safe after a major earthquake on Friday, March 11th. Western has 13 students studying in Japan while six K-College students are taking classes there.

WMU officials say they used e-mail, text messages, Facebook, Twitter and phones to get in touch with students in Japan to verify their status. They say nine WMU students are in the Tokyo area while three are in Kyoto and one is living in Otaru.

There are 38 Japanese students enrolled at Western's main campus in Kalamazoo. A university spokeswoman said Friday morning that all but one of them were able to get in touch with their families back home.
