Gongwer: four more ballot proposals get enough signatures

State officials say supporters of four more proposals gathered enough petition signatures to get their questions on the November ballot. But the Gongwer News Service reports that two of those questions still face hurdles.

The two questions certified by the Michigan Bureau of Elections that don’t face any challenges will appear on the ballot this fall. One is the “Michigan Energy, Michigan Jobs” initiative to require that a quarter of the state’s electricity come from renewable sources by 2025. The second is a proposal by Citizens for Affordable Quality Home Care which would let unions organize home health care workers.

One of the questions that do face challenges is already in court. Last week the Michigan Court of Appeals heard arguments on a proposal that would allow eight more casinos in the state. Another question that would add a right to collectively bargain into the state constitution also faces challenges.
