State Senate could vote on smoking ban this week

State Senate leaders are deciding whether to bring a proposed workplace smoking ban to the floor for a vote this week. The state House approved a workplace smoking ban last week. The House legislation exempts casinos, cigar bars and tobacco shops. But the Senate Republican majority is divided on a ban.

Last year supporters of the ban were able win approval of a version that included no exceptions.? Detroit lawmakers have opposed a total ban. They say the city's casinos would lose too much business if smoking isn't allowed inside.? Senate Majority Leader Mike Bishop says he's in no hurry to vote on a smoking ban because budget issues are a higher priority.
