A representative for the engineering firm working on the site says leaving the dirt where it is may be the safest option. Residents and city officials would prefer to see the contamination completely removed so the land can be reused. EPA officials say a final decision is made in the middle of next year.
EPA still working on plan to clean up Kalamazoo landfill
The Environmental Protection Agency is a step closer to making a decision on the future of the Allied Paper landfill in Kalamazoo. The area next to Portage Creek is contaminated with toxic PCBs. Representatives from the EPA presented the findings of a feasibility study Thursday night at the Radisson Plaza Hotel. Options include everything from hauling off all the contaminated soil to simply sealing up the site.
